First day

10:00 – 14:30: Depart from Vientiane to Vang Vieng.

In the journey travel to Laos, Vang Vieng is often the next destination after the capital Vientiane that tourists want to visit. It is located about 150km from the north of Vientiane (takes 4 hours by car). There are two departure cars per day, at 10am and 2pm with ticket price of 35,000 Kip. Along the road, you will be enjoyed a majestic scenery of high mountain ranges, rivers,… Due to its location in the mountain area, Vang Vieng’s weather is usually a little bit cold in the early morning and late afternoon.

14:30: Arrive Vang Vieng station

It takes about 5-7 minutes to reach Vang Vieng center by free bus offered by Malany Hotel. All passengers will get off at Malany Villas. If you want to save money, you can stay at Malany Villas costing about 70,000 Kip/night for a double room but without breakfast. This is a favorite place to stay of many foreigners. Or if you’d like to stay in a more spacious accommodation, you should go to the Malany Hotel, 5-minute walk from Malany Villas. The price for a night is about 120,000 Kip for a double room, breakfast is included.

15:00: Check in hotel, take a short rest

16:30 – 17:30: Have dinner at Mai Pai (Savang Road, Vang Vieng Town). Mai Pai offers nice decoration, delicious food and serves authentic Lao and Thai cuisine.

For Lao food, you can enjoy “lab kai” (spicy chicken with salad), “lab moo” (spicy pork with salad) or “Lab phamug and gung”, costing about 20,000 – 25,000 Kip.

17:45 – 18:00: Watching the sunset at Nam Song River. Nam Song River also attracts visitors many exciting games such as tubing, kayaking or bungee jumping.

18:30 – 20:00: Walking around the town of Vang Vieng.

From the town center, walk 5 minutes along the Nam Song River where many bustling nightclubs are located. Crossing the suspension bridge, you will come to a separated area with many lovely bungalows. There are also many eateries, bars, shops selling souvenirs, earrings, scarves,… at the river’s banks. If you want to buy souvenirs, remember to bargain first.

21:00: After a day of walking, let’s go to foot massage shop to relax, costing 30,000kip/30minutes.

22:00: Back to hotel and take a rest

Day 02

Tham Poukham in Vang Vieng (via Panoramio)

8:00 – 11:00: Visiting Tham Poukham.

Renting a tuk tuk to visit the Blue Langoon Poukham (Tham Poukham), located about 7km from the town center. You have to pay 100,000 Kip for renting tuk tuk and 10,000 Kip for entrance fee. Because inside the cave is very dark, you should bring flashlight before entering Tham Poukham.

12:00: Return to Vang Vieng center and buy ticket for Luang Prabang trip at night.

13:00: Have lunch at Mai Pai. The restaurant also offers delicious pizza, with price 110,000Kip, enough for 4 people.

15:00 – 17:00: Cycling to explore the villages in Vang Vieng and Lusi Cave.

Depending on your bargaining skill, you can rent a good bike with a cheap price. The average cost for a few hours is 10,000 Kip. It will definitely be unforgettable experiences when cycling through the fields full of yellow flowers, stopping at anywhere to take nice pictures. After that, you ride the bicycle through the forest to reach Lusi Cave (2km from Nam Song River). Don’t forget to apply anti-mosquito cream before entering the forest.

17:30: Back to the hotel to bath, take a rest and prepare for the next trip in the Land of a Million Elephants.

19:00: Dining

20:30: Your Vang Vieng journey and depart to Luang Prabang.
